20 August & 24 December 2024, 16 June 2025
If you’ve been feeling run off your feet while deeply craving peace, you’re not alone. The heady, buzzy pace of Jupiter in Gemini is at odds with Saturn in Pisces’ call to solidify peace and calm. While the mind fizz is exciting, with its great ideas and flashes of insights, the mental off switch is missing as Jupiter looks to a misfunctioning Mercury until 15 September. As Jupiter builds to square with Saturn in Pisces, you may need a “forced reset”, so finding ways to consciously create that balance is key to managing the next week.
While this aspect isn’t exact until August 20, this week Mars will use its assertive voice to amplify the energy and then Venus becomes entangled closer to the time. It’s a mishmash of supportive versus harsher energies, so you may feel excitement and trepidation all at once. Jupiter has beneficial powers of uplift and hope, but that is weakened in the discomfort of Gemini. Saturn’s boundaries are more porous in Pisces and structures less resilient but of the two, it has the most strength.
When Hellenistic astrologers look at aspects, we consider the slower-moving planet to be emitting rays towards faster-moving planets. Imagine an actor lit up by a spotlight, their true image affected by the colour or strength of that spotlight. Here faster moving Jupiter is lit by Saturn and put under its cautious, sombre rulership. Also, Saturn in its position in Pisces overcomes any planet in Gemini, putting Saturn in the role of authority. So, Jupiter’s effusive, optimistic and life-giving properties are in effect dampened, grounded or halted by the cold, harsh realities that Saturn brings. You may feel like opportunities have been knocking but now there are high hurdles in the way of you opening that door.
Square aspects which mark tension, as two quite different energies need to find a way to interact. Where breezy Gemini air meets calm Pisces water, they seem to be working at cross purposes and need to work to understand each other’s language. As Jupiter in childlike Gemini stirs mental excitement, seeks intellectual adventures and brings a plethora of ideas, Saturn in Pisces says slow down, take your time and reach for the emotionally mature response.
Jupiter tries to expand the mind and hasten the pace, while Saturn say calm, slow and mindful wins the race.
Aspects between slower planets are important markers of time on a larger scale and this square links to the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction back in December 2020. These two social planets meet every 20 years and set trends on the world stage, as well as the personal. Now we are in the opening square of this new 20-year cycle, so whatever was begun or grown then is being challenged to see if it can stand the test of time. One example here in Australia is where the NSW Government is winding back working-from-home privileges for their employees given to them during COVID.
As slower planets move towards each other, their energy builds like a train coming into a station. This week we will have platform announcements from Mars announcing what we might expect, and then Venus‘ sweet voice will be heard next week.
Mars will first conjunct Jupiter on Thursday, which brings a blending of their energies as Mars’ forward drive is struck by Jupiter’s potent growth fuel. With both in Gemini, under retrograde Mercury’s leadership, expect strong internal mental chatter, sharp words and speed-created miscommunications on Wednesday and Thursday. It can cause overconfidence or bold, impulsive decisions, so look to Saturn’s cautious tales to bring balance here. I suggest finding playful ways to burn off energy or channel your words into competitive realms as a way to harness this energy
Friday 16 August brings Mars square to Saturn, very similar to Jupiter as above but with Mar’s urge for forward motion it may feel like all you were excited about hits a brick wall. Mars’ in Gemini has a sharp wit and an even sharper tongue, so expect heated exchanges as tension builds over the coming week. Ground into the calm of Saturn in Pisces to stay as centred and mindful as possible and not give into frustrated or heated exchanges.
Venus tries to smooth ruffled feathers in the days following, but bereft of her usual resources of sweetness and charm whilst in efficient Virgo, she’ll need to lean into the discerning and pragmatic instead. Her attempts to intervene on the same day as the exact square, 20 August, may bring practical compromise or gentle greasing of the wheels. If all else fails, call for a ceasefire and restart diplomacy at the end of the month once Venus is in Libra and Mercury is direct again.
The sway retrograde Mercury has over this gathering of planets also doesn’t bode well for smooth communications, so be prepared for hijinks and try to see the hilarity in messy situations. Channel the mischievous and misinformed role Puck plays in A Midsummer Night’s Dream!
Also note that this is the first of three of these squares. The next on 24 December doesn’t have the thrust of Mars involved, so it may have less to say. The final is 16 June 2025 and in the cardinal signs as Jupiter in Cancer squares Saturn newly arrived in Aries. The last will be a very different energy as Jupiter holds sway over a weakened Saturn also swamped by Neptune. I also believe it will more obviously tie into the conjunction that happened in Cardinal Capricorn in December 2020. This could be when our hopes are strengthened by the challenges of Saturn’s limitations, and we draw on the truths and the values of our souls.
Themes to think about
Square aspects create can spur us into action to resolve the tensions you feel. From small refinements to large adjustments, these themes may arise to test your growth potential over the rest of this 20 year cycle.
Hope or Reality?
Hope feels hard to access right now, in the face of global concerns and the uncertainty many feel. Yet I wonder if we are mixing up hope with its near enemy, blind faith?
In her Substack, Sarah Wilson is writing on the topic of hope in relation to climate and she is a proponent of truth over hope to find a way forward, so we can at least accept where we are now before planning for the future. She also shared this quote which resonates so strongly with this Jupiter-Saturn square.
True hope “is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.” This takes a good dose of Saturn reality to accept what is before you and trust what makes sense on a gut level before trying to reach for Jupiter optimism.
Eastern religions also teach that reaching enlightenment is about discovering the true nature of reality, and personal growth is just a stepping stone to this, often by getting out of our way in the process.
Merging Logic with Intuition
Jupiter in Gemini and Saturn in Pisces both have wisdom to share but from different ends of the spectrum. Jupiter in Gemini is very active and flexible, sating its curiosity with all the facts and coming from many reasoned standpoints to make sense of a situation. Saturn in Pisces is more grounded and fluid, trusting patience and intuition to offer a solution. While they may seem like opposing forces, the best solutions come from marrying the facts with grounded intuitive wisdom.
Feelings AND facts
The brain is split into two hemispheres, the right devoted to intuition, creativity, imagination and emotion, and it lives very much in the moment. The left side is logical, analytical, linear and strategic and projects into the past or future. You might assume that emotional healing happens only on the left side, but in truth, it takes building connections between sides to integrate pain and fully heal.
Saturn in Pisces may have dredged up unconscious fears or habits from the past that need to be balanced against logical present reality so our truth can be found. Unconscious beliefs and family stories will wisp into nothing when held up to the facts Jupiter in Gemini offers. The potent combination of Gemini’s curiosity with Pisces’ compassion is a perfect recipe for deep acceptance and healing.
Solitude or socialising
Saturn in Pisces is like a monk in his cell, removing themselves from the world to anchor and deepen connection to worlds beyond our seen. However, Gemini is all about networking, and socialising, so Jupiter’s excitement may pull you into social butterfly mode when part of you just wants to be at home alone with your feelings. You can have both, but having clear boundaries on rest and knowing when to say no to the flurry of social opportunities will help with potential burnout. And if you’ve moved more into Saturn’s serious and sombre retreat, balancing it with human connection and lighthearted fun will enhance perspectives. To quote His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, “Laughter is good for thinking because when people laugh, it is easier for them to admit new ideas to their minds.”
