Libra Season 2024

Happy September Equinox! The Sun’s entry into Libra always marks the equinox, that cusp of balance, as day and night and equal and you move towards the halcyon haze of summer or crisp embrace of winter, depending on your hemisphere.

Libra season starts this year during an eclipse season, and after that powerful and puzzling “Alice-down-the-rabbit-hole” eclipse last week, the Sun’s move into Libra may offer some small respite, just for a few days. Eclipses are a key feature of Libra season again this year, as the Sun meets the power-draining South Node on 29 Sept and then is eclipsed by the New Moon in Libra on Oct 2.

A common misnomer about Libra is believing it is a STATE of balance; those perfect conditions when all is equal and well proportioned. Yet balance can never be maintained, not in nature and certainly not in us. Libra is the ACT of creating balance, of gently guiding and maintaining the balances of the world to ensure they stay within their appropriate range. From the amount of sunlight you receive each day to the blood sugar balance within your body, there’s always a state of flow away from and towards balance and the guardianship of this is Libra’s realm

I remember writing about the North Node in Aries possibly heightening global aggressions back in June 2023, while the South Node in Libra drains hampers peacekeeping efforts. The last 18 months have certainly lived up to that, with the most deaths recorded due to conflict since World War II and worldwide diplomatic efforts failing. The veil has also been lifted on worldwide inequality – financial, social and gender – as the middle class is shrinking along with decades of gains in racial and women’s rights. Perhaps this has also leaked into your personal life as well, as the gap widens between loved ones and the urge to bridge it has faded. False alliances, frayed connections and fractured partnerships will pass under the piercing glare of Venus in Scorpio (23 Sept – 18 Oct) for most of Libra season and her detoxifying nature will help purge what no longer belongs.

Does this mean we lose all hope? No, instead hear the invitation to speak up as Libra also reminds us that ALL voices need to be heard for true equality. This is peacekeeping under pressure, and Venus in Scorpio will help us meet that demand! Saturn in Pisces is pushing uphill to solidify peace and these two together encourage us to find considered and calm ways to bring balance to our relationships, and the world. One example is Mahatma Gandhi’s use of non-violent protest as he aimed to restore equality in India.

For you, whether this is voting, debating with friends, or protesting on the streets, don’t fold to Libra’s shadow side of conflict avoidance. Instead, work out which connections are truly valuable and be willing to lean in and bridge gaps. When Venus moves into Sagittarius (18 Oct – 12 Nov) you can apply open-minded understanding to see the bigger picture.

And remember, the South Node’s ultimate lesson is liberation from earthly attachments, inviting toward enlightenment. As this Libra season starts with Venus at 29 Libra and in the bardo between eclipses, it seems time to let go of old ways of creating balance and seek new and fairer social structures.

Dates to watch for Libra Season

23 Sept – Venus into Scorpio seeks the raw places and looks beyond the surface for deep connection. She will peel back the layers and penetrate vulnerable spaces, to love and heal. Flaws and mistakes are not a barrier to Venus in Scorpio’s love, as long as they are acknowledged and repairs attempted.

29/30 Sept – Sun and Mercury conjunct the South node will be a few days of lowered vitality and feelings of lowered self-esteem. If the monkey mind rears its head today, practice self-compassion and patience, knowing this too will pass. It’s also a day when spiritual practices will we can reach into the great beyond for insights and understanding.

3 Oct – Solar eclipse at 10 Libra will continue the trajectory of this eclipse series, and the lights may be turned out on some relationships. Not a day for New Moon manifesting, instead clean house, both literally and figuratively, to honour the purging energy of this South Node eclipse.

5 Oct – As Venus trines Saturn you have a chance to have realistic conversations about partnerships and look to the long-term. You know there’s work to do, and understand that relationships are as successful as the amount of work put into them.

8 Oct – Mercury in Libra trines Jupiter in Gemini encouraging open-mindedness and positive thinking, so bring the new ideas to the table today, especially if they’re a little outside the box. Learning, teaching and communication are all well balanced today, though the Venus trine to Mars on the same day may also see passions rise and desire take control.

14 Oct – the Sun trines Jupiter today, which always brings confidence and enhances a positive sense of self. On its own, it’s amazing, but as the Sun squares Mars soon after, I’d suggest cautious confidence and knowing thyself as arrogant or competitive behaviour now can lead to consequences later on.

18 Oct – the mood lightens as Venus moves into adventurous Sagittarius, bringing her infectious optimism to encourage inspiration. Expand your horizons in relationships, whether wandering the earth with a loved one or embarking on spiritual journeys together.

23 Oct – Sun square Pluto is right before Scorpio season starts, the Sun makes a final farewell to Pluto Capricorn. Some final realisations about the harm of “peace at all costs” and the way control harms connection.
