Planetary days – Wednesdays and Mercury

You’ve heard me talking about planetary days and hours in astrological magic, and quite a few of you have had questions about it. So I thought to spend the week ahead exploring the ruler of each day and how we can work more consciously with its energy to have more flow in our lives.

Normally, it’s hard to do in our Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 routine. However these unusual times encourage the start of new times, and working in concert with the planets could be a better way to live. In traditional astrology, the planetary days start at sunrise, and the planet ruling the hour at sunrise has its energy carried with the sun throughout the day. So on Wednesdays Mercury rules the hour at sunrise, and his quicksilver, curious nature is carried through the day.

The first planet out from the Sun it is the first to receive its influence, and so Mercury is used to being at the centre of things, gathering information and connecting it all together. Mercury is our mind, our thoughts, our expression and along with the Moon it contributes to the quality of our mind – Mercury expresses what the Moon knows, the messenger rather than the message.

Mercury rules communication and that is what Wednesdays are all about. Thinking, talking, meeting, sharing, learning, writing – anything that gets those mental processes spinning is perfect for these days. He is linked to god Hermes, he of the winged feet, who carried messages between the gods. So crafting and sending messages to others is a perfect use of the day. From tackling your email inbox, to writing blogs, to making important phone calls, make Wednesday your day to do that. If you need to schedule days full of back-to-back meetings, then Wednesdays are your friend.

If you teach or study, try using the mental stimulus of Mercury on Wednesdays for better information retention or general good brain activity. Research also works today, as does pitches or sending carefully crafting messages, social media and bulk emails, as others are more likely to be open to reading them. IT stands for information technology, which is definitely Mercury’s bag, so do all the IT things on Wednesdays, from buying new to servicing or replacing it – except of course under Mercury retrograde.

His quick energy is quite nervy, as Mercury rules the nerves, so its day to ensure you keep breathing (Mercury also rules the lungs) to stay calm and ensure you’re not going too fast. A mantra I use regularly on Wednesdays is “Go slow to go fast”, which simply ensures I’m not tripping over my own feet in my excitement. Doing exercises that encourages you to breathe while moving, such as yoga, pilates, tai chi or just walking, are all great Mercury day activities.

The connecting of Mercury is also linked to travelling and transport, so it’s a good day to get your car fixed, or to go on short trips. Finally, the best use for Mercury is socialising. It’s a day to coffee dates, lunch with friends, going to your local bar after work for that hump day celebration.

Mercury loves many things, so wear anything multi-coloured today, or you could also try a splash of orange in your Wednesday outfits, especially if you have a Gemini or Virgo rising, or they rule your MC.

  1. Here it is Wednesday, and I’m able to soak this information up like a sponge. I’m able to document and notate like I would normally like to do without the normal easy distractions. Information Retention you say? Most definitely a thing! I appreciate this information. Thanks!
